Indonesia Requires Food Importers to Register Products on Halal Platform

Indonesia's Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) announced that food importers must register their products on the SiHalal online platform to obtain halal certification. Under Law 33/2014 on Halal Product Assurance and its related regulations, this requirement will be mandatory starting October 17, 2024, for food producers and their supply chain partners, including trade, retail, and logistics entities. The certification process will cover all stages of production, such as slaughtering, processing, packaging, storage, transport, marketing, and sales. Additionally, all products containing prohibited ingredients must be labeled as “non-halal.”

The new measure also expands the range of products that must be halal-certified, including all imported food, beverages, medicines, chemicals, cosmetics, and other goods. Companies exporting to Indonesia must obtain certification from BPJPH or a BPJPH-recognized Halal Certifying Body (HCB) before export. They must also separate halal and non-halal products throughout production, processing, storage, and transport, comply with new labeling requirements, and ensure that Indonesian importers have registered the halal certification online. Any unregistered product, even if marked as halal in its country of origin, will be regarded as non-halal in Indonesia.
