Turkey

Turkey is located in the westernmost part of Asia, straddling the two continents of Europe and Asia. Surrounded by sea on three sides, it borders the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south, with a coastline of 7,200 kilometers. Turkey shares land borders with eight countries across Asia and Europe, totaling 2,648 kilometers. To the east are Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran; to the southeast are Iraq and Syria; to the west are Bulgaria and Greece. Across the sea to the north are Romania, Russia, and Ukraine, and to the south is Cyprus.

Turkey is not only an important Islamic country but also a NATO member and a candidate country for the European Union. It is a founding member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and a member of the Group of Twenty (G20). Turkey is one of the fastest-growing countries in the world. In 2022, its GDP ranked 19th globally, achieving a high growth rate of nearly 5.6%.

Mineral Resources
Turkey is rich in mineral resources, primarily marble, boron, chromium, thorium, and coal, with a total value exceeding 4 trillion US dollars. According to Turkey's "Main Economic Indicators of Mining in 2022," Turkey's natural stone and marble reserves account for 33% of the world's total, ranking first globally in both variety and quantity.

Languages
The official language of Turkey is Turkish, and ethnic minorities also use Kurdish, Arabic, Armenian, and Greek. Popular foreign languages include English, Russian, French, German, and Spanish.

Agriculture
Turkey ranks as the world's seventh-largest agricultural production area and the ninth-largest agricultural producer. It has a strong agricultural foundation and is self-sufficient in major agricultural products like grain, cotton, oil, and sugar. Key agricultural outputs include tobacco, cotton, rice, olives, beets, citrus, and livestock. Turkey is also a major producer of dried figs, hazelnuts, raisins, apricots, and honey. It ranks first globally in the production of hazelnuts, cherries, figs, and apricots; second in watermelons, sour cherries, cucumbers, and chickpeas; third in citrus and apples; fourth in pistachios, strawberries, chestnuts, walnuts, and lentils; fifth in beets; sixth in lemons and grapes; and seventh in seed cotton.

Building Materials
Turkey is one of the world's major producers and exporters of building materials, including construction steel, cement, ceramics, and glass products. In 2022, total building material exports were 33.74 billion USD, with export markets covering over 200 countries and regions.

Chemical Industry
Turkey's chemical industry is technologically advanced and diverse, playing a crucial role in its industrial system. Turkey has 62,000 chemical companies employing 375,000 people. Key products include petrochemicals, inorganic and organic chemicals, fertilizers, coatings, pharmaceuticals, soaps and detergents, synthetic fibers, essential oils, cosmetics, and personal care products. Turkey is the world's 7th largest and Europe's 2nd largest plastics producer and the 5th largest coatings producer in Europe. Additionally, Turkey hosts the largest alkali plant in the Middle East, with an annual production capacity of 2.9 million tons.

Machinery Manufacturing
Machinery manufacturing is a main growth driver for Turkey's economy and plays a vital role in its large-scale manufacturing sector. It is a significant area for attracting foreign direct investment. Turkey's machinery manufacturing industry is known for intensive research and development, producing over 450,000 engineering graduates annually. In 2022, machinery industry exports reached 25.3 billion USD.

Shipbuilding
Turkey is the world's fifth-largest shipbuilding country, with 84 shipyards and a shipbuilding capacity of 4.65 million deadweight tons. It also has a ship repair capacity of 25 million deadweight tons and can build ships up to 180,000 tons. The shipbuilding and repair industry generates 3 billion USD in annual revenue and creates over 50,000 jobs. Main products include oil tankers, chemical tankers, container ships, bulk carriers, general cargo ships, tugboats, barges, yachts, fishing boats, speedboats, and military ships.

Commodity Trade
From January to May 2024, exports increased by 4.5% year-on-year to 106.0877 billion USD. Manufacturing accounted for 94.2% of exports, agriculture, forestry, and fishery 3.7%, and mining 1.6%. Imports decreased by 9.2% to 143.682 billion USD. Intermediate products comprised 70.0% of imports, capital goods 14.6%, and consumer goods 15.3%.

From January to May, Russia was the top import partner, with imports from Russia totaling 19.09 billion USD, followed by China (17.846 billion USD), Germany (10.806 billion USD), Italy (8.498 billion USD), and the United States (6.931 billion USD). Imports from the top five countries accounted for 44.0% of total imports, while the top ten countries accounted for 58.3%.

Top 10 imported goods include mineral fuels, boilers and machinery parts, motor vehicles and parts, electric machinery and equipment and parts, gemstones, precious metals, pearls and products, steel, plastics and products, organic chemicals, copper and products, and optical, medical and other equipment and parts.

Germany was the top export destination from January to May, with exports to Germany reaching 8.609 billion USD, followed by the United States (6.459 billion USD), the United Kingdom (5.893 billion USD), Italy (5.433 billion USD), and Iraq (5.378 billion USD). Exports to the top five countries accounted for 29.7% of total exports, while the top ten countries accounted for 47.1%.

Top 10 export commodities include motor vehicles and parts, mineral fuels, electric machinery and equipment and parts, gemstones, precious metals, pearls and products, plastics and products, knitted clothing and accessories, iron or steel products, steel, non-woven clothing and accessories, and edible fruits and nuts.
