Chile

Chile is bordered by Bolivia and Argentina to the east, Peru to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and faces Antarctica across the sea to the south. It is the country with the highest degree of economic openness in Latin America and also a country with a relatively high level of economic and social development in Latin America. In 2023, the Chilean economy performed well and became the most competitive economy in Latin America.

The official language of Chile is Spanish. The Mapuche language is widely used in Indian settlements, and the main foreign language is English.

Mining
Chile is very rich in mineral resources. It ranks first in the world in terms of copper reserves, production, and exports. It is also the second-largest producer of lithium carbonate in the world and the only producer of natural nitre.

Fruit Planting
Chile is the largest exporter of fresh fruits in the Southern Hemisphere and exports 75 kinds of fruits to more than 100 countries and regions around the world. Chile mainly plants grapes, apples, kiwis, avocados, nectarines, plums, pears, cherries, blueberries, and peaches, etc. Its fruit export volume ranks first in South America, the export volume of plums ranks first in the world, the export volumes of table grapes and avocados rank second in the world, the export volume of kiwis ranks third in the world, nectarines fourth, and apples and blueberries fifth. The main fruit production and export enterprises are as follows: Hortifrut Chile S.A.; Copefrut S.A.; Unifrutti Traders Ltda; Dole Chile S.A.; Del Monte Fresh Produce (Chile) S.A.; etc.

In 2022, the export volume of Chilean fruits was 3440,000 tons, and the export value reached $74.4 billion. The export volume increased by 0.6% year-on-year, while the export value decreased by 0.4% year-on-year. Among them, the export value of cherries was $21.3 billion, and the export volume was 397,000 tons, with 90% exported to China; the export value of table grapes was $8.71 billion, both of which decreased compared with the previous year. The export values of five major categories of fresh fruits, namely cherries, grapes, apples, blueberries, and avocados, accounted for 82.1% of the total export value of fresh fruits in that year. The main export destinations of Chilean fruits are China and the United States.

Forestry
Chile is rich in temperate forest resources, mainly regenerated forests, and is the largest exporter of forest products in Latin America. The main forest products in Chile are timber, pulp, and paper, etc. In 2022, the export value of Chilean forest products was $66.6 billion. China is the largest importer of Chilean forest products, mainly importing wood pulp. The key forestry enterprises in Chile are: ARAUCO Group and CMPC.

Wine Industry
Since the 1990s, the Chilean wine industry has developed rapidly and become one of the important emerging wine-producing regions in the world.
The grape varieties in Chile mainly include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc, etc. The traditional export markets of Chilean wine are mainly the United States and the United Kingdom, and the exports to Asian countries such as Japan and China have shown relatively rapid growth. According to the latest data of the Chilean Wine Association, the export value of bottled wine in Chile in 2022 was $15.56 billion, a 2% decrease year-on-year. Among all the agricultural product exports in Chile, the export value of wine ranks second, and the main export destinations are the European Union (34.1%) and Asia (27.9%). The main wine production enterprises in Chile are: Concha y Toro, Santa Rita, San Pedro, Tarapaca, Errázuriz, Montes, Emiliana, etc.

Chile's Foreign Trade
Chile is a member of international and regional organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Organization of American States (OAS), Pacific Alliance, Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA), and Latin American Integration Association (ALADI). Chile signed the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in 2018.

There are 27 important ports in Chile. The ports in the northern part mainly transport mineral products, and the ports in the middle part mainly transport various solid bulk goods, liquid bulk goods, and general cargo.

In 2023, the total export value of Chile reached $944.08 billion, a slight 1.6% decrease year-on-year. Among them, the export value of non-copper and lithium goods was $413.37 billion, a 1.8% decrease year-on-year; the export value of services was $21.53 billion, a 55.5% increase year-on-year, and in December 2023 alone, the export value of services in Chile reached $2.77 billion, with particularly prominent growth in the fields of information and communication technology, scientific and technological research and development, and management services. From a regional perspective, in 2023, the main destination of the export of non-copper and lithium goods and services in Chile was Asia, with an export value of $147.49 billion, a 3.4% increase year-on-year. Next were North America and South America, with export values of $123.03 billion and $72.13 billion respectively. From a country perspective, in 2023, the country that received the most exports of non-copper and lithium goods and services in Chile was the United States, with a shipment value of $96.76 billion, a 1% decrease year-on-year; next was China, with a shipment value of $86.69 billion, a 9.4% increase year-on-year; and the third and fourth places were Japan and Brazil, with export values of $27.85 billion and $26.59 billion respectively.

In 2024, the total export value of Chile in August was $80.12 billion, a 1.4% increase year-on-year; the total import value was $68.79 billion, a 7.3% decrease year-on-year. In August 2024, the total export value of the mining industry in Chile was $47.07 billion, an increase compared with $43.73 billion in the same period last year, among which the export value of copper was $42.71 billion, a 18.9% increase year-on-year; the export value of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries was $3.74 billion, an increase compared with $3.53 billion in the same period last year. In August 204, the import values of consumer goods and intermediate products in Chile were $20.23 billion and $40.14 billion respectively, both of which decreased compared with the same period last year.
