Guatemala is located in the northwest of Central America. It borders the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. It is bordered by Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. Guatemala is the largest economy in Central America.
Guatemala is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Central American Integration (SICA), an observer state of the Pacific Alliance, and is applying to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP). Guatemala has signed free trade agreements with many countries or organizations such as the United States, Central American countries, the Dominican Republic, Canada, and the European Union. 【Processing and manufacturing industry】
The exports of Guatemala's processing and manufacturing industry account for about one-third of the total export volume. The main trading partners are Central American countries, the United States, Caribbean countries, South America and the European Union. 【Agriculture】
Guatemala is rich in coffee, sugar cane, cardamom, bananas, etc. In recent years, the exports of vegetables and tropical fruits have gradually increased.
In 2020, exports increased slightly. The export value of cardamom was 1.1344 billion US dollars, coffee was 650.4 million US dollars, bananas was 813.1 million US dollars, and sugar cane was 576.8 million US dollars.

The total amount of general trade exports stood at US$8,638.3 million, US$82.1 million less (-0.9%) than the amount recorded as of July 2023 (US$8,720.3 million). The most important products according to their share in the total export value were: clothing items with US$940.8 million (10.9%); coffee with US$691.3 million (8.0%); bananas with US$561.6 million (6.5%); sugar with US$475.4 million (5.5%); edible fats and oils with US$379.3 million (4.4%); and cardamom with US$358.5 million (4.1%). These products represented 39.4% of the total exported.
The main destinations of exports according to their share were: Central America with US$3,071.8 million (35.6%); the United States of America with US$2,801.1 million (32.4%); the Eurozone with US$618.3 million (7.2%); Mexico with US$421.2 million (4.9%); and Panama with US$197.4 million (2.3%); countries and regions that together represented 82.3% of the total.
Imports in July 2024
The total amount of imports made stood at US$18,645.0 million, US$1,152.4 million higher (6.6%) than that recorded as of July 2023 (US$17,492.6 million). The increase in imports was mainly influenced by the positive variation observed in non-durable consumer goods with an increase of US$329.9 million (10.0%) and raw materials for industry with US$219.1 million (4.8%).
Imports came mainly from the United States of America with US$6,203.2 million (33.3%); the People's Republic of China with US$2,543.4 million (13.6%); Central America with US$2,139.2 million (11.5%); Mexico with US$2,020.4 million (10.8%); and the Eurozone with US$1,119.6 million (6.0%); countries and regions that together represented 75.2% of the total.
