Progress on China's Application to Join the CPTPP
During a recent press conference held by the Ministry of Commerce of China, a journalist inquired about the progress of China's application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), referencing recent meetings between China and CPTPP member countries such as Japan, Australia, Peru, and Canada.
"China attaches great importance to the work of joining the CPTPP" responded He Yucheng, spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce. He noted that President Xi Jinping has reiterated China's commitment to pursuing CPTPP membership at several high-level diplomatic forums.
Since submitting its application, China has conducted in-depth analysis and assessment of the agreement's provisions, prepared market access offers covering goods trade, services trade, investment, and government procurement, and engaged with CPTPP members at multiple levels through various channels. Additionally, China has submitted external communication documents to the CPTPP Commission, showcasing its determination, capability, and actions to meet the agreement's high standards.
China has also proactively aligned its domestic policies with the agreement's requirements. This includes advancing policy adjustments, revising relevant laws and regulations, and piloting initiatives in selected free trade zones and ports.
Looking ahead, "We will continue to engage in in-depth communication with all CPTPP members in accordance with the relevant accession procedures to actively advance the process of joining the CPTPP," He stated. China also plans to steadily expand institutional opening-up and align its policies with international high-standard trade and economic rules such as the CPTPP. Efforts will focus on achieving compatibility and coherence in areas including intellectual property protection, industrial subsidies, environmental standards, labor protections, government procurement, e-commerce, and financial services.
This proactive approach highlights China's commitment to global economic integration and adherence to international trade norms.
