India Issues 187 Quality Control Orders Covering 769 Products Under Mandatory BIS Certification

According to a recent announcement by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of India, a total of 187 Quality Control Orders (QCOs) have been issued by regulatory bodies across various sectors. These orders cover 769 categories of products that are now subject to mandatory certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Two Key Cross-Sectoral QCOs Introduced:
1. Safety of Household, Commercial, and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2024
Issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, this order mandates BIS certification for all household, commercial, and similar electrical appliances that:
1) Operate at voltages not exceeding 250V (single-phase AC) or 415V (three-phase AC)
2) Are not already regulated under other QCOs
2. Safety of Machinery and Electrical Equipment (Comprehensive Technical Regulations) Order, 2024
Issued by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, this regulation brings 20 categories of machinery, electrical equipment, components, and spare parts under the scope of BIS mandatory certification.

Compliance Requirements:
All products covered under the above QCOs must comply with the relevant Indian Standards and obtain certification from BIS. Upon certification, products must display the BIS Standard Mark. Non-compliant products cannot be manufactured, sold, traded, imported, or stored in the Indian market.
