China Files Complaint with WTO Against U.S. Tariffs

On February 4, 2025, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce stated that China has brought a case against the U.S. tariffs through the WTO dispute resolution mechanism in order to defend its legitimate rights.
On February 1, the U.S. announced a 10% tariff on certain Chinese products.
On February 4, the spokesperson addressed reporters regarding China's legal action at the WTO against the U.S. tariff measures. The spokesperson emphasized that the U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods violate WTO rules in a severe manner, labeling the move as typical unilateralism and trade protectionism. This action, the spokesperson said, seriously undermines the rule-based multilateral trading system, damages the foundation of China-U.S. economic cooperation, and disrupts the global supply chain. The spokesperson noted that the U.S. has repeatedly imposed unilateral actions, which have been strongly condemned by many WTO members. China firmly opposes these actions and calls on the U.S. to immediately correct its mistakes.
The spokesperson reiterated that China is a strong supporter and important contributor to the multilateral trade system and is willing to work with other WTO members to address the challenges posed by unilateralism and protectionism, thereby ensuring the orderly and stable development of international trade.
